Here is a snapshot of the activities MGHS Students and staff have been involved in this year in relation to VET and Careers:
Monarto Zoo Work Experience - Year 12 student Emma Page successfully applied for a week's work experience at Monarto Zoo.
Emma found it a fantastic experience and commented 'I would recommend applying for zoo work experience if you have an interest in working with animals and want to pursue it as a career'.
RAAF Edinburgh Work Experience - Year 10 student Chelsea McKinnon successfully applied for a week's work experience. She was one of two girls involved and throughout the week participated in a simulated shoot, simulated flight, worked with the Military Dogs and heard information from a variety of people employed by RAAF.
National Career Development Week: 'Career Fun' - To celebrate NCDW the school ran a series of homegroup competitions for students and staff to participate in. These included, name these careers, unscramble the careers, rank these jobs and describe the obscure jobs. Winners for 2012 were: Year 12's Briana Seager and Taysha James, and the team from 11Bk - Jakob Opie, Steph Newton, Tayla Kovaleff, Callan Hinton, Lewis Nankivell, Jess Mills and Malinda Markiewicz.
Limestone Coast Rotary Careers Expo, July 27 - Year 10 students had the opportunity to find out more about career and study options, and collect information to assist students in clarifying their career interests or determining future career pathways. The expo included numerous industry and university exhibitors, guest speakers, interactive displays, demonstrations, workshops, competitions and performances. The expo covered key areas including, pathways into various careers, industry expectations, training and education requirements, SATAC information, youth allowance information, interview techniques and much more.
Year 10 student Ryleigh Franchetto said, 'I found the expo really enjoyable and it had lots of career ideas for students when they leave school. The expo helped me workout what I want to do in my future career.'
Children's Zoo Work Experience - Year 11 student Tammy Woodall successfully applied for a week's work experience at Adelaide Zoo in the Children's Zoo. Tammy commented 'for people wishing to take part in work experience at the zoo, it is a great chance to interact with many different animals, enjoy getting to know them and to experience what it is really like working in a zoo'.
School Industry Partnership Celebration Dinner - The South East Automotive Skill Centre and its key industry partners were recognised at The Barn Palais on August 16 receiving a sustainable partnership award for a successful and long-standing association with local businesses and community groups.
Speakers in Schools regional tour visit: Thursday 16th August - Year 9 students had the chance to listen to three motivational speakers Hayden McComas - Australian Customs and Border Protection Service, Mark Sharoglazov - LJ Hooker Real Estate and Edward Milne - Managing Director FTE Solutions. The school was also fortunate to be asked to undertake some filming for 57 Films on behalf of Speakers in Schools for use in future promotional work. Under the guidance of teacher Heather Katsaparos, Lewis Nankivell (Year 11), and Year 10 students Ebony McDiarmid and Simone Phelan took time out from their other subjects to do this filming. They filmed the presentations and then interviewed the speakers and some students to gain their views about the Speakers in Schools program.
Year 9 student Chrisoula Andrinopoulos said, 'The speakers were very inspiring! I learnt that it doesn't matter how many jobs you have as long as you find one that you enjoy'.
University visits - Students visited the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia open days on August 19. Deakin Warrnambool offered MGHS students a personalised tour of the campus on Wednesday August 22nd.
VET Hair and Beauty Photo-shoot - Certificate II in Hairdressing and Certificate II in Retail, Makeup and Skincare students held a photo-shoot to demonstrate the skills they had learnt while studying their respective courses.
Building Trades - Plumbing Trades Presentation Breakfast - Held on November 15, student achievements in this Industry Skills program were acknowledged.
South East Automotive Skill Centre Industry Breakfast - Held on Tuesday November 27, members of the industry, staff and students from the centre, TAFE lecturers, and other Limestone Coast representatives gathered for a breakfast to celebrate the ongoing success of the centre and thank industry for their support. It was also a chance to thank Paul Jupe for his contribution to the industry.
Student Achievements:
Former Year 12 student (2011) Lauren Gilcrist was announced as a South Australian recipient of the 2011 Australian Vocational Prize in recognition of her of her achievements in completing her Certificate III in Dental Assisting and her SACE while working full-time at Ferrers Dental Surgery.
Year 11 student Thomas Garner won the Most Outstanding Student from the South East Automotive Skill Centre - Skill Centre Based Award (Donated by the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West) at the annual Automotive Industry Group - South East awards night on December 3.
Year 12 student Brad Auld was awarded the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier Lakes Best and Most Promising Second Year Doorways to Construction Plus Student Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West at the Building Trades - Plumbing Trades presentation breakfast on November 15.
37 students were acknowledged at Performance and Presentation Night in December for completion of Australian School Based Apprenticeships at Certificate II and III level in 2012. The areas included; Business, Fitness, Hospitality and Retail. Other award winners on the night included:

- Year 11 student Nathan Meinck - Banner Hardware/Doorways to Construction award
- Vocational Pathways: Best School Based Apprentice student - Megan Young
- Vocational Pathways: Best Vocational Education and Training student - Dale Medhurst
- Group Training Employment: Vocational Education and Training award - Josh Thomson
