Design
Year 8 Design
Year 8 Design aims to develop a visual and verbal vocabulary in students by encouraging the study of design principles, Typography, colour, form and function and a theoretical investigative study of a designer and their work.
Students work within three broad fields of design: Graphic and Visual Communication, Product and Design for the Built Environment to produce posters, logos, designer toy concepts, house plans as well as familiarise themselves with the language, tools and methods of traditional, and non-traditional, methods of image making.
Year 9 Design
Year 9 design provides students with the opportunity to further develop their basic design skills using a variety of media. Students undertake a study of the design process, the design brief and use techniques, vocabulary and concepts related to design with instrumental drawing and freehand illustration as important elements within the subject. Beginning with a study of questions such as: What is design? What makes good design? With a focus on Contemporary Australian design/ers and in particular Eco Design - students are required to develop critical literacy skills in understanding the role aesthetics plays within the subject of design.
Year 10 Design
Year 10 design is a semester course that begins with a foundation study of student's knowledge of design principles through introductory tasks studying: Contrast, Balance, Unity, Repetition and Rhythm, Proportion, Movement and Harmony. Knowledge of basic colour theory is assumed as students will apply technical knowledge to formal design problems in the second half of the course beginning with Typography and lessons in Graphic and Visual Communication.
Year 10 design also aims to familiarise students with the language, tools and methods of (vector-based) drawing and reinforces similarities to traditional (and non-traditional) methods of image making covered in Year 8 and 9 Design. The rest of the course focuses on building proficiency with illustration software (Adobe CS3 Illustrator, Photoshop and Flash) in a design context. Information is reinforced via tutorials and short design exercises which target specific topics and techniques covered during lessons.
