Technology in Action
The range of subjects available to students in the Design and Technology area is very extensive.
There is no choice, however, for Year Eight students, as a common course applies here. The emphasis in Year 8 is to teach basic skills and knowledge relating to common tools and materials before having students operate in teams to create solutions to design briefs in a competitive environment.
Subject offerings at Year 9 include photography, pedal prix, jewellery, electronics, robotics and girls only options as well as other traditional choices. A design based approach is common to these, with students relying on a design process to interpret the given briefs for project work. There is a requirement to learn how to produce working drawings in most instances.
A design based approach continues into Year 10, with new subject offerings available here as well. Subjects include Landscape Design, Building and Construction, Aquahort, Auto Maintenance, Multimedia, plus a mix of other choices. With a wide choice of options students should have little difficulty in engaging in an area of interest for them.
A good breadth of subject choice is available for the senior school. New subjects for Year 11 include Girls Home Maintenance and Graphic Communication. Many Year 11 students are choosing to select VET subjects and the school has been conscious of the importance of supporting these. For students interested in picking up an alternative area of study, Community Studies becomes an option as well.
