Career events - a taste of what VET has to offer
It is possible for students to undertake VET (Vocational Education and Training) units as part of their secondary school programme. These units are normally nationally accredited and can be used as credit toward a variety of Certificate Level Courses across Australia. Such courses are usually taught by TAFE or other private training providers. Up to 400 hours of stand-alone VET modules can be counted toward the SACE.
VET encompasses a wide variety of activities
Mount Gambier High School is part of a cluster arrangement that exists with Lower South East Secondary Schools. This means that students from this school can access VET subjects that are offered at other schools. These subjects are delivered flexibly using learning packages and assignments that are sent to the student. The teacher of the subject may also require the student to attend sessions at their school, TAFE or to attend a workplace. Because of this, students may receive extra uncommitted lessons at school in order to accommodate this type of subject or to catch up on other work. Some courses have costs involved.
The VET subjects that students at Mount Gambier High School can access fall into the following categories:
- Full or partial certificate level courses that are offered as stand alone VET e.g. as part of the free choice section of the SACE pattern. These are MGHS subjects, but may be offered to students at other schools. Currently MGHS based VET courses include Automotive, Electrotechnology and Food and Hospitality.
- Full or partial certificate level courses that are offered as above, but by other schools. For example Doorways to Construction is based at Grant High School. Further information about these courses can be found in the VET South East Handbook PDF - 2Mb.
Selection procedures vary with VET courses. Many of the courses offered throughout the cluster will require a written application and an interview, with industry representatives involved. Extra information on application procedures can be found in the VET South East Handbook PDF - 2Mb.
