Learning .... Optimism .... Enjoyment

Centenary Weekend 20th-21st September 2008

Centenary Weekend

Our Centenary celebrations focused around 20 and 21 September. On the Saturday the school was opened from 10 am until 3pm. Saturday night we continued the excitement at the Barn Palais. Our very special speaker for the occasion was Mr Robert Easther.

Mr Easther attended Mount Gambier High school from 1956 - 1960. In his final year he was elected head prefect. During his time at school he was widely recognised as an accomplished athlete, footballer and sportsman. In his professional career Mr Easther has been the leader of many expeditions for the Australian Antarctic Division. He has recently retired and now works for the Mawson’s Hut Foundation as the expedition manager.

The Centenary '08 Committee was also pleased to announce that three international performers, Don Burrows, Graeme Lyall, and Tony Gould were to join in with the Centenary Celebrations. All have long established international careers in the music business, spanning roles as musicians, arrangers, composers, musical directors, mentors and music educators.

Over the years Don Burrows has spent much time with students in schools throughout Australia, and has inspired and influenced more young band players in more school bands than perhaps any other Australian musician. These days, Don is teaching himself how to play bass trumpet.

Graeme Lyall is a saxophonist of international standing brought with him an impressive list of achievements and experiences. Graeme has a passion for supporting young musicians, acting as a mentor, confidante and inspiration to hundreds of aspiring young musicians across Australia. Today he calls Mount Gambier home.

Tony Gould is a pianist, composer and university lecturer. His career has embraced many musical styles, including traditional and contemporary classical, jazz and improvisatory music. He has been a chief adjudicator of eisteddfods and scholarships throughout Australia.

For two days, Don, Graeme and Tony worked with Mount Gambier High School students and performed during on-going entertainment provided on the Open Day. They were the feature act for the Centenary Dinner.

A wonderful weekend of events ...

Centenary Weekend 20th-21st September 2008

Congratulations to everyone associated with our Centenary Celebrations which were a wonderful success. The team of parents, staff, volunteers and Old Scholars began planning for the Centenary Celebrations a year ago and there have been a huge number of hours put in by the team and by staff who have assisted with many elements of the event. The weekend was the culmination of a series of events from the initial balloon launch and the series of 'Clowning Around' workshops involving professional clowns and acrobats, to the wonderful weekend events.

For many people who returned to the school and the town to renew friendships and to visit places of significance from earlier years, it was a memorable weekend of music, reminiscence and fellowship.

Our thanks as a community goes to the very hardworking Centenary Committee consisting of Neville Crawford, Judy Crawford, Peter Telford, Margie Jones, Ian Gould, Ed Newport, Charles Miller, Suzanne Dukalskis, Carolyn Flood, Denise Pettingill, Monica Burt, Beth McKay, Wendy Telford, Shameema Esufali, Tony Scott, Bronwyn Telford, Angelika Dening and Kathryn Bennett. The team is very proud of the wide range of community agencies, businesses and individuals they have involved through sponsorship and assistance to create an experience which many will remember for a long time. Thanks also to the many people who, while not on the Committee, have made significant contributions.
