Learning .... Optimism .... Enjoyment

Vision

Mount Gambier High School promotes and values a spirit of Learning, Optimism and Enjoyment. We work within a caring and diverse community, with a sense of commitment. We promote positive relationships based on trust and respect. We are valued and encouraged as individuals. We have the freedom and responsibility to achieve our best.

Learning

Our commitment is to shape the curriculum into one that supports the needs of all students, that fosters learning in as many and diverse ways as possible, and that gives the student a voice as a learner. To cater for a diversity of talent and interest we offer:

  • Multimedia, dance, film making and theatre production
  • Eight special interest sports programmes
  • Certificate II in Music, Certificate I in Automotive and Forestry
  • Pedal Prix
  • Active8: Premier's Youth Challenge
  • Learning support
  • Programmes for 'at risk' students
  • Girls Technology - Enterprise, Changing Rooms

We offer a range of scholarships to students who might be unable to access enriching cultural and sporting activities.

Optimism

We believe that relationships sit at the heart of learning and a culture of belonging is essential for the wellbeing of the individual and the school community. We strive to ensure that our students are acknowledged as individuals, they have a voice in school planning and decision making, and are encouraged to see the possibility and the potential of their success. Our commitment to enhancing resilience is evident in the School Code of Conduct - CARE - and a diversity of programmes.

  • Communication
  • Achievement
  • Respect and
  • Empowerment
are the touchstones for all our endeavours. Students entering the school are linked to a Peer Support Programme in Year 8 or a Mentoring (Buddy) System at other year levels.

We are a 'Telling School' and have developed programmes to prevent bullying and promote positive peer relationships.

At each year level we have a focus on positive factors linked to success in life and learning, goal setting, team skills, an understanding of the role of organisation and planning in achieving goals, study skills, and strategies to cope with stress and solve problems.

Enjoyment

Our aim is that the students will always have something to do, and activities to enjoy or adopt as a challenge. Sporting and cultural activities are strongly represented: they form the basis of our annual exchange with Glossop High School. We have a proud record in interschool athletics, swimming and cross country events. Students have the opportunity to be involved in a wide range of Knockout sports.

Students showcase their creative talents in a variety of music, drama and film productions and art displays. School beautification projects are based on student design. Debating and public speaking are strongly promoted. You could become a member of the Chess Club or Amnesty. Other students are committed to the Environmental Action Group and recycling projects.
