Laptop Guidelines

Mount Gambier High School asks at minimum that the device:

  • runs Windows 10. Mac devices can be connected to the school network, but there are limitations.
  • has a 6-hour plus battery life to last the school day.

To extend:

  • Avoid Chromebooks or Windows 10S Laptops – Chromebook and Windows 10S laptops are usually cheaper but they are restricted by storage and the ability to install programs. Software such as Adobe Creative Cloud is not able to be installed on these devices.
  • Screen Size – Larger screen sizes affect portability, weight and battery life. 10 to 13-inch screens are standard for most users, while those using intensive multimedia applications may benefit from a larger screen.
  • Storage – A Solid State Drive (SSD) is recommended. These drives may have lower capacity than traditional hard drives but are much faster and less susceptible to failure.
  • Processor – Intel Processors such as the i3 and i5 models are standard for most users, while those using intensive multimedia applications may benefit from a higher performance processor such as Intel i7’s.
  • Memory – 4GB or greater, 8GB is becoming standard.
Additional Protection
  • Laptop sleeve, shell or bag – Protect your investment with a laptop sleeve, shell or bag. When the device is not in use or is being transported use a case.
  • Warranty and Accidental Damage Protection – Most devices are covered under warranty for 1 year, if investing in a more expensive laptop consider extending its warranty. Accidental Damage Protection may also be available.
  • Insurance – It is recommended parents check their home insurance coverage to see if the device is protected from theft or damage at school.
Software
  • Microsoft 365 is provided by the Department for Education for every student enrolled at Mount Gambier High School. Parents do not need to purchase Microsoft 365.
  • Adobe Creative Cloud licenses are allocated to students studying relevant courses.
  • Educational software such as Autodesk Fusion 360 and Efofex Tools are also available for BYOD students.
Device Connection

Students wishing to connect their device to the school network will need to return any school issued equipment before the ICT Team will support the connection process. Once all equipment is returned the ICT Team will ensure the student is connected to the internet, network drives, printers and Microsoft 365 is installed and licensed.
