Sports Opportunities
Sport Opportunities at MGHS
At Mount Gambier High School, students have the opportunity to represent the school in a wide range of Statewide and South East Zone sporting competitions throughout the year, as part of School Sport SA. These events give students the chance to compete across a variety of sports, develop their skills, and represent Mount Gambier High School with pride. Competitions are offered across different age groups: Year 7/8, Year 9/10, and Open divisions (in most instances), ensuring all students have the chance to be involved. Students nominate online, and trials may be held as part of the selection process.
Participation in School Sport SA competitions help students:
- Develop skills in a competitive but supportive environment
- Build teamwork, communication, and leadership
- Represent their school with pride
- Create friendships and positive experiences through sport
Interhouse Competitions
Our school proudly hosts exciting Interhouse Athletics and Swimming Carnivals each year in Term 1. These events foster school spirit and a strong sense of belonging, as students work together towards team success.
Competitions include both traditional swimming and track and field events, as well as a variety of fun novelty activities designed to cater for all skill levels.
We have four houses:
- Gambier – Yellow
- Lake – Blue
- Mount – Red
- Tower – Black
Students compete for two prestigious awards – the P.M. Cutbush Swimming Carnival Shield and the Ian Gould Athletics Carnival Shield.
Those interested in representing the school in sporting events can stay informed by checking the Daymap bulletin notices, the school term calendar, or speaking directly with the staff in the PE office.
Berri (formerly Glossop) Exchange
The Berri Sporting and Cultural Exchange continues to be an important event in the Mount Gambier High School calendar. Since COVID, the exchange has taken place in a modified format as a one day carnival, however, in 2025 we travelled to the Riverland for the first time since 2020. This exchange is the longest running public schools exchange in South Australia, lasting over 70 years, with only petrol rationing and a polio outbreak being the reasons for it not taking place. Since Glossop High School moved to Berri and undertook a name change, the schools now compete for the Carthew Sporting Cup and the Symonds Debating Shield, with both awards honouring the founding Exchange Principals from the 1940’s.
