Get Involved: Supporting Each Other at MGHS
At Mount Gambier High School, we recognise the importance of building a community where everyone feels supported, connected, and confident to check in on one another.
This term, we encourage all students and families to get involved with the Ask a Mate campaign, a positive initiative aimed at helping people have better conversations about mental health, wellbeing, and looking out for each other. On Ask a Mate day, 16th May, take the opportunity to have a chat with a young person and build the foundations for open encouraging support.
The Ask a Mate website (www.askamate.com.au/resources) provides practical tips, conversation starters, and resources to support you in reaching out to mates, friends, and loved ones who might need a check-in. Whether it’s recognising when someone’s having a tough time or learning how to genuinely ask “Are you okay?” and listen, these tools are relevant for students, families, and our wider community.
How can you get involved?
-
Explore the Ask a Mate resources together as a family.
-
Make time to start a conversation with a friend or classmate – you never know what a difference it could make.
-
Share tips and stories about how you support your mates.
-
Encourage your children to take those little moments to check in with their peers, and model that behaviour at home.
Together, we can keep building a caring and respectful school community, one conversation at a time.
Please see the attached resources for more information, or the Wellbeing team to discuss solutions.
